Friday - June 11th
Une Soiree de la Danse - A Workshop Participant Show

Time: 6pm-930pm (after show open dance to CDs)
Location: Mercury Café at 2199 California Street

Admission: $5 Suggested Donation at the Door

A workshop participant show to celebrate the weekend. This is an open show to perform for those signed up for workshops. All levels welcome to perform.

To perform, register for your workshop(s) and contact Saira (sairadancer@comcast.net).

There are limited performance slots. Please register for your workshop(s) prior to requesting to perform as this is a workshop participant show -- performance spots will not be held for those not registered.

~ Private Lessons During the Day ~

During the day on Friday, Princess Farhana will be available for privates and semi-privates of your choosing. Contact shimmy2bfree@gmail.com to reserve one-on-one time with Princess Farhana. If there is something you would like to learn that we are not offering, take a private lesson. Price depends on number of people.

Spectacular Showcase featuring Princess Farhana

Time: Show at 7pm with Open Dancing to Live Music after Show (Doors at 615pm)

Join Shimmy 2B Free for a night of professional performances featuring our guest instructor Princess Farhana. Various performers will light the stage with a spectacular show and variety of styles - performers include many of your Colorado favorites and also a few visiting from other states. A full list of performers will be posted on the Shimmy 2B Free site closer to the date.

After the show, enjoy open dancing to live music by Kara Nomadica (www.karanomadica.com).
Along with a great show and live music, we will have vendors, open bar, snacks and raffle.

Saturday 10am-12pm 9/8: To Jump or Not To Jump! with Selayma Anan
Also known as "Karshlima", the 9/8's rhythm is a very fun and flirty rhythm, with and without skirt accents, and traditionally, is very bouncy! Whether you are new to 9/8,
or have danced this wonderful rhythm in the past, in this workshop you will learn how to
schmoooooooze your way through this unique rhythm; adding a bounce when you feel it,
and learning unusual combinations for when you don't! You will also learn playful stops
and accents, incorporating your hands and eyes, to help create a well-rounded performance.

Selayma Anan's performance of the 9/8 rhythm has been described as "the smoothest"
ever seen . . . come and see why! This is not a class on Skirt dancing, and zills will not be
covered. Turkish-style choreography will be taught, and full notes provided.
Workshop for all levels of experience.

Saturday 1-3pm Exploring Taqsim: Soft, Slow & Slinky with Princess Farhana
This workshop will focus on super-slow and sensuous gooey movements
perfect for interpreting languid Oriental and Chiftetelli pieces.

In addition to learning about lyrical dance interpretation and working on
concepts to increase your musicality, you will learn to decrease the speed
at which you perform by using internalized muscular movements and
resistance. There will be an emphasis on developing abdominal technique,
such as belly rolls, flutters, stomach pops and soft expansions and
layering them all together!This is a Shimmy 2B Free exclusive -- do not miss it!
Basic Belly Dance experience is suggested.

Sunday 10am-12pm Tribal or Cabaret? Sharp to Slinky Combos with Phoenix
Join Phoenix to shimmy, slink, slither and shake up new combinations for your routines and
improvisational dance. The combinations will explore the similarities and differences between the
cabaret and tribal fusion styles. Phoenix will break down the movements and technique for the
combinations, give ideas for music to match the presentation and add a few fun surprises for the
audience. Along with combinations, learn to work with the music and engage your audience using
zill accents and patterns. The combinations will include slow-slinky, fast-energetic and drum
accents for a variety of ideas.

Note: Zills are not required but an option to add accents and an additional challenge for dancers.
Phoenix will review any zill patterns and give practice ideas for each pattern used.

Sunday 1-3pm Rockin' Raqs Sharqi Combinations Hollywood Style! with Princess Farhana
These sizzling combinations will enhance any type of belly dance performance,
and can be used in improv or choreographed situations. These combinations
might look complicated, but are broken down into clear, easy-to-follow segments.
We will run the gamut from stationary "gooey" taqsim combo's to cute traveling
steps, entrances and exits, series of turns, level changes and sassy beledy
moves complete with footwork, hand and arm embellishments and use of space. We
will also explore adding shimmy layers and spicing the moves up with level,
speed and directional changes.
Workshop for all levels of experience.

Have the ability to stay, shop and relax between workshops.
We do also have a box lunch menu set up for your convenience. Michael's of Denver
Catering can provide a wonderful box lunch for you for $10.50. While we are near
downtown, many of the places nearby will be closed on the weekend. See the Menu
(click here) for options. You can order through Michael's directly or through us.
Orders must be received by Michael's by June 11th.

When The Hip Hits the Fan - Semi Private Opportunity on Sunday Evening

Once the Shimmy 2B Free Events are over, we still have more fun on Sunday Evening with a special Semi-Private Class!

This is NOT included in the Shimmy 2B Free workshop pricing and also we have limited space for this class. This is an extra class outside of the shimmy weekend events -- a fun fan workshop while Princess Farhana is here!

*Princess Farhana is known for her Fan dance - join us for a special class in addition. Space is limited! All styles of fans from oriental to veil to feathers and more - can be used in this workshop. Also, this class is not just for belly dancers.*

When the Hip Hits the Fan: Belly Dance & Fan Dancing Fusion with Princess Farhana

Become a FAN-tastic dancer while you add a new dimension to your belly
dancing! Princess Farhana will teach you how to dance with fans, whether they
are smaller hand-fans or Sally Rand-style mega-plume extravaganzas. After a
rigorous, full-body warm up , we will go over hand and arm positions;
dramatic poses; double and single fan manipulations, Asian-influenced,
Flamenco-influenced and "conceal-and-reveal" burlesque-type moves all easily
adapted for fusion with Oriental dance. We'll drill some slow taqsim
technique and then move on to combinations perfect for fan-fusion dancing.
Also included: tips on constructing and caring for fans and written class notes.
Bring along a fan or two of any size. There will also be pairs of hand-fans
available for purchase in the class as well.
This class is open to all levels.

Vending will be located in the lobby with the registration and snack/bar. Vendors will be able to sell during workshops and show (both days). Vendors may leave their items overnight (load in and out once for the 2 days).
